Darvaza – The Gate to Hell

Deep in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan, an enormous fiery pit has been burning for more than 50 years. Known as the 'Gateway to Hell,' the Darvaza Gas Crater is a terrifying sight—a gaping hole of roaring flames in the middle of an isolated wasteland.

The crater was created in 1971 when Soviet geologists accidentally collapsed a natural gas field while drilling. Fearing toxic gas leaks, they ignited the crater, expecting the fire to burn out within a few weeks. Instead, it has continued burning uncontrollably for over half a century.

Many believe the site carries a supernatural presence, as **local legends tell of an ancient gateway to the underworld** hidden beneath the desert. Some say strange figures can be seen moving within the flames, and those who get too close report hearing distant whispers or screams. Others claim the fire has an unnatural ability to burn without consuming its fuel.

The crater, approximately 69 meters wide and 30 meters deep, is now one of the world’s most surreal and terrifying landscapes. Despite warnings, some travelers venture near the edge, drawn by the eerie glow and unsettling energy of the never-ending fire.
