Corvin Castle

Corvin Castle, also known as Hunyadi Castle or Hunedoara Castle, is one of the most dramatic and foreboding fortresses in Europe. Located in Transylvania, Romania, this Gothic-Renaissance stronghold dates back to the 15th century and is surrounded by myths, medieval cruelty, and vampire lore. With its looming towers, stone bridge, and grim dungeons, it’s no wonder it’s often referred to as Dracula’s other castle.

The castle was built by John Hunyadi and expanded over centuries. It allegedly held Vlad the Impaler (the inspiration for Dracula) prisoner for several years. The castle is sometimes mentioned as a source of inspiration for Castle Dracula in Bram Stoker's 1897 horror novel Dracula, although Stoker was unaware of the castle's connection to Vlad the Impaler.

Torture chambers, an eerie well said to have been dug by Turkish prisoners, and a bear pit add to the macabre atmosphere.

Corvin Castle’s chilling ambience has attracted filmmakers across genres. It has been used as a backdrop for horror and fantasy films, including The Nun (2018), Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011), BloodRayne*(2005), and Nosferatu (2024). Its imposing silhouette and haunted reputation make it a favourite for fans of the morbid and the cinematic.
