Cliff Burton Museum & Memorial Stone

The Cliff Burton Museum near Ljungby, Sweden, is a fan-founded tribute to the legendary Metallica bassist who died in a tour bus accident in Dörarp on September 27, 1986. Opened in May 2022, the small museum serves as a meeting place for fans and a keeper of Cliff’s legacy. The adjacent Memorial Stone, placed by the community in 2006, marks the site where Burton’s bus crashed. The museum’s board includes local organizers and Metallica enthusiasts who secured support from Sweden’s National Heritage Board.

Inside the museum, visitors find memorabilia such as posters, original album covers, tickets, signed items, and stories from the accident’s first responders. They even got the original drum set used on the Master of Puppets tour in 1986. The museum’s structure is designed around the story of Cliff Burton – from his childhood to the day he died in Sweden – only 24 years of age.

The memorial stone lies just off the E4 highway near Dörarp and is inscribed with a quote from “To Live Is to Die”: “Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home.” Fans continue to leave offerings—guitar picks, beer cans, notes, and Metallica memorabilia—creating an evolving, elemental shrine. Revived bus stop signage now labels the nearby stop as “Cliff Burton’s memorial stone,” marking the site as a pilgrimage destination.
