The fortress was the last refuge of the Cathars, a religious sect accused of heresy by the Catholic Church, believed to have possessed forbidden knowledge, occult wisdom, and possibly the Holy Grail itself.
In 1244, after a brutal siege lasting over nine months, the stronghold finally fell to the forces of the Pope and the King of France. Over 200 Cathars were burned alive at the foot of the mountain, choosing death rather than renouncing their beliefs. Legends say that before the fortress fell, a small group of Cathars escaped with a great secret, possibly the Grail or lost occult texts.
Today, Montségur is surrounded by an eerie energy. **Visitors report strange glowing lights over the ruins, whispers on the wind, and feelings of deep sorrow in the execution field below. Some believe the spirits of the Cathars still haunt the mountain, guarding their lost secrets.
In 2003 Iron Maiden published a song titled "Montségur", about the Catholics' stakes of Cathars, on their album Dance of Death.
