Chillingham Castle

Chillingham Castle stands as a foreboding medieval stronghold near the English‑Scottish border, first established in the 12th century as a monastery before evolving into a fortress. It functioned as a strategic bulwark through border wars, royal visits (including Edward I during his campaigns in Scotland), and brutal feuds between the Greys and other northern powers.

Today, the castle is notorious for its specters. Among its many apparitions, the “Radiant Boy”—seen at midnight in the Pink Room, bathed in blue light—remains one of the most famous. His skeletal remains, clothed in blue, were found walled into the room in the 20th century, lending tragic weight to the legend.

The restless spirit of Lady Mary Berkeley also roams Chillingham’s halls. Abandoned by her husband (who eloped with her sister), she’s regularly heard rustling through corridors in mourning or searching for him.

The torture chamber—purported site of gruesome medieval executions and rumored haunt of the torturer John Sage (“Butcher of the Scots”)—has lodged visitors’ darkest memories, with reports of bone‑snapping echoes and cries of agony.

Additional haunts include the White Pantry, haunted by a pale woman who vanished after begging for water—a victim of poisoning—and the chapel vaults hiding skeletons of unknown origin. The surrounding grounds include the sinister “Hanging Trees” and the “Devil’s Walk”—outdoor spaces where ghostly monks, cold spots, and disembodied whispers persist.

Designated the most haunted castle in England, Chillingham offers guided ghost tours, overnight stays, and paranormal events—inviting the bold to wander its corridors, where centuries of cruelty, sorrow, and legend still linger.
