Castelul Dracula (Transfăgărășan) is a contemporary, Dracula-themed attraction in the village of Căpățânenii Ungureni, often mistaken for a medieval fortress linked directly to Vlad the Impaler. The site itself is modern and theatrical in nature, but its significance lies in its location rather than its architecture.
Just above the attraction, high on a steep mountain ridge, are the ruins of Poenari Citadel — widely regarded by historians as the true stronghold of Vlad Țepeș. Reached by climbing more than 1,400 steps from the valley, Poenari was a strategic fortress rebuilt and expanded by Vlad in the 15th century and served as a real seat of power, punishment, and defence.
Castelul Dracula functions as a gateway site to this history. While the attraction itself leans into popular Dracula imagery, it sits in the shadow of the genuine ruins above, where the boundary between fiction and history becomes unmistakable.
