Imperial Crypt – Capuchin Crypt

Hidden beneath the Capuchin Church in Vienna, the Capuchin Crypt (Kaisergruft) is one of the most haunting burial sites in Europe. Established in 1618, the crypt houses the remains of **more than 140 members of the Habsburg dynasty**, including emperors, empresses, and nobles who ruled over vast European territories.

The dimly lit chambers contain **elaborately decorated metal sarcophagi**, many adorned with skull motifs, grim reapers, and skeletal figures—reflecting the dynasty’s deep association with death and power. Among the most notable tombs is that of **Empress Maria Theresa**, whose grandiose coffin is one of the largest in the crypt. Visitors can also see the simple yet unsettling resting place of **Emperor Franz Joseph I**, who ruled during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
