Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni, Romania, stands as an opulent Neo‑Romanian architectural gem completed in 1911 by architect Grigore Cerchez at the behest of Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, famously nicknamed “Nababul” (“the Nabob”). Built atop a former family hunting lodge, the castle blended national heritage with Belle Époque elegance—featuring electricity, modern plumbing, and lavish interiors from Murano stained glass to oak carvings.
The Cantacuzino family traces its lineage to the Byzantine imperial house, and the castle functioned as a summer residence until the Communist regime seized and repurposed it as a sanatorium in 1948. Restored and reopened to the public in 2010, today it houses art galleries, restaurants, and even an adventure park within its historic grounds.
