Bust of Vlad the Impaler

In the courtyard of the Prahova County Museum of History and Archaeology in Ploiești stands a sombre monument to Vlad Țepeș, better known as Vlad the Impaler (1431–1476). Renowned for his ruthless methods of punishment, especially the impalement of enemies, Vlad’s rule over Wallachia left behind a legacy of fear and fascination that still endures today.

The bust presents Vlad with stern features, reminding visitors of his reputation as both a national hero who defended his land against the Ottomans and a figure of cruelty whose name became synonymous with terror. Placing the monument within a museum setting highlights the historical complexity of his reign, bridging fact and folklore.

Visitors encounter the statue in a quiet courtyard, where its presence resonates with Romania’s dark medieval past. It stands not only as a commemoration of a controversial ruler but also as a symbol of the blurred line between history and myth that gave rise to Bram Stoker’s fictional Count Dracula.
