Buddha Park
A surreal riverside sculpture garden in Laos filled with dozens of giant concrete deities, demons, and symbols—blending Buddhist, Hindu, and deeply eccentric visions.
Buddha Park (also known as Xieng Khuan) is one of Southeast Asia’s most bizarre and compelling spiritual sites. Located just outside Vientiane, Laos, this outdoor sculpture park contains over 200 massive statues depicting everything from serene Buddhas to multi-armed Hindu gods, demons, animals, and creatures from Laotian mythology.
Built in 1958 by the mystic priest-shaman Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, the park merges Buddhist and Hindu iconography with personal, surrealist interpretations. The result is a dreamlike, sometimes nightmarish landscape where religious reverence meets esoteric fantasy. Some sculptures are over 40 metres long or several storeys tall—including a massive reclining Buddha and a pumpkin-shaped structure representing hell, earth, and heaven, which visitors can climb into through the mouth of a demon.
While not traditionally “dark,” Buddha Park’s haunting figures, decaying concrete forms, and eccentric spiritual philosophy give it an undeniably strange and otherworldly vibe. It’s an offbeat pilgrimage into the mind of a mystic—and a must-see for dark tourists with a taste for the surreal.
