Founded around 750 AD on the island of Björkö in Lake Mälaren, Birka is considered Sweden’s first urban settlement and a major Viking trading hub. It flourished for over 200 years, connecting Scandinavia to distant markets across Europe and the Middle East. Archaeological excavations have uncovered treasures such as Arabic silver, Eastern European beads, and luxurious textiles, highlighting Birka’s role in extensive trade networks.
Today, visitors can explore a reconstructed Viking village, complete with period-accurate houses, workshops, and boats. Guided tours lead through burial mounds, the ancient hillfort, and the Black Earth—the original town site. The museum showcases artifacts and detailed models depicting Viking life.
Accessible only by boat, Birka offers a unique journey into the Viking Age, combining historical insights with scenic beauty. The site also features a restaurant serving Viking-inspired cuisine and hosts various events throughout the season.
