Beckov Castle

Beckov Castle, known in Slovak as Beckovský hrad, stands as a dramatic ruin atop a 50-meter limestone cliff overlooking the Váh River in western Slovakia. Its origins trace back to the 13th century, serving as a strategic outpost for the Kingdom of Hungary. Over the centuries, it evolved from a military fortress to a noble residence, reflecting Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles.

One of the castle's most notable owners was Stibor of Stiboricz, a Polish nobleman who transformed Beckov into a grand family seat in the late 14th century. He commissioned artists from across Europe to embellish the castle, adding a chapel adorned with sculptures and paintings, including a renowned statue of the Black Madonna.

Beckov Castle is also the subject of various legends. One tale speaks of Stibor's jester, Becko, who requested a castle be built in his name. Another recounts a servant's curse leading to Stibor's demise, and there's even a story of a dragon residing in the castle's well, its snores shaking the village.

Though partially in ruins due to a fire in 1729, the castle remains a cultural monument, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past and the legends that continue to captivate imaginations.
