Bathory Castle and Wax Museum

Bathory Castle and Wax Museum (Hungarian: Báthori Várkastély és Panoptikum) is one of the key historical attractions in the town of Nyírbátor in eastern Hungary, closely associated with the powerful Báthory family. The building itself is a restored noble residence/castle complex, and the exhibitions take visitors through local history, the family’s influence, and the atmosphere of late medieval and early modern Hungary.

The “Panoptikum” element gives the place its darker pull: staged scenes and lifelike figures bring historical characters and events to life in a theatrical, sometimes unsettling way. For many visitors, the strongest hook is the shadow of Erzsébet Báthory — the notorious “Blood Countess” — whose legend has become tangled with folklore, sensationalism, and horror history. The museum plays into that grim aura without being a pure haunted-house attraction.
