Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) is one of Istanbul’s most mesmerising historical sites — and a literal descent into darkness. Built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, it once stored up to 80,000 cubic metres of water for the Great Palace and surrounding buildings. Today, it feels more like an underground cathedral, with its endless rows of columns rising from dark, glimmering water.

Though one of hundreds of ancient cisterns hidden beneath the city, the Basilica Cistern is by far the most spectacular. Its vaulted ceilings and reflections create a sense of otherworldly stillness, broken only by the echo of dripping water. But the most striking feature lies in the far corner — two massive Medusa heads used as column bases. Their origin remains a mystery: possibly salvaged from earlier Roman temples. One is placed upside down, the other sideways, perhaps to strip the Gorgons of their power to turn mortals to stone.

Film lovers will recognise the cistern’s cinematic aura. It has appeared in several productions, including From Russia With Love (1963), Inferno (2016), The International (2009), Ghost Rider (2007), and even the video game Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. Standing among the pillars and the shallow water, it’s easy to see why — the place feels timeless, eerie, and impossibly beautiful, as if built for both emperors and ghosts.
