Bannerman Castle
A crumbling “castle” on a small Hudson River island, built as a military surplus arsenal and later abandoned after explosions, fire, and decades of decay.
Bannerman Castle (often called Bannerman’s Castle) stands on Pollepel Island in the Hudson River, between Beacon and Cold Spring, New York. It was built in the early 1900s by Francis Bannerman VI, a major military-surplus dealer, who bought the island to store ammunition and equipment and designed the dramatic, castle-like buildings as both warehouse space and a gigantic advertisement for his business.
The site has a long dark-history arc. An explosion in 1920 damaged parts of the complex, and later decades of neglect and weather took a steady toll. Sections of the structure have collapsed in modern times, leaving a jagged ruin that looks like something from a Gothic novel, framed by the cliffs of the Hudson Highlands.
Today the island is managed with preservation and stabilisation in mind, and access is typically via guided tours and special events run in cooperation with New York State Parks and the Bannerman Castle Trust. Seeing the ruin up close—reachable only by boat—adds to the feeling of isolation, mystery, and “forbidden place” atmosphere.
