Aljube Museum – Resistance and Freedom

Aljube Museum – Resistance and Freedom is housed in the former Aljube prison, just steps from Lisbon’s Sé Cathedral. The building has a long history as a place of confinement, but its darkest chapter came in the 20th century, when it held political prisoners during the Portuguese dictatorship. For many detainees, Aljube was a first stop in a system built on surveillance, intimidation, and punishment for dissent.

The museum focuses on the lived reality of repression: censorship, political policing, interrogation, imprisonment, and the networks of resistance that tried to survive under constant pressure. Rather than presenting history as distant facts, it leans on testimony, documents, photographs, and personal stories to show what dictatorship does to ordinary lives, families, and communities.

Visiting Aljube is deliberately heavy. It is not a spectacle museum, but a confrontational space where the city’s bright streets outside clash with the knowledge of what happened inside these walls. It stands as both a warning and a memorial — a place that insists that freedom is not abstract, and that democracy has a cost.
