Čachtice Castle

Perched atop a rocky hill in Slovakia, Čachtice Castle was once a grand fortress, but today its crumbling ruins echo the terrifying legend of Báthori Erzsébet, also known just as Elizabeth Bathory. Known as the ‘Blood Countess,’ she was accused of luring servant girls into the castle, where she allegedly tortured and killed them in gruesome rituals.

The legend claims she bathed in their blood to preserve her youth, though historical accounts suggest her trial was politically motivated. In 1610, she was arrested and imprisoned within the castle walls, where she spent her final years bricked inside a room until her death in 1614.

Today, visitors can explore the eerie remains of the castle, walk its desolate halls, and stand in the same chilling spot where Báthory’s dark legend was born. Some insist that Elizabeth's story inspired Bram Stoker's novel Dracula (1897), although Stoker's notes on the novel provided no direct evidence to support this theory. But her story is often associated with the vampire legend, as there is a huge number of movies inspired by the life of Elizabeth Báthory.
